OARS & BT ADVOCATES (formerly Ogwang &Co. Advocates) is a registered Law Firm having Ms. Rita Aceng Ogwang who has a work experience of over 19 years and Mr. Brian Tendo who has practised law for over 18 years as its Partners. 

We have established ourselves as a highly professional Law Firm in Uganda and are proud to be one of the few firms in the country that have adopted the English legal professional practice standards in executing our work.
Our endeavors (due to past experience) have enabled us to build a solid reputation which can only be seen growing with every passing year.
We have succeeded in building this practice(in some areas) with core capabilities in all fields of corporate and commercial law ranging from non-contentious transactional work to highly contentious complex litigation.

The firm was started at a time when new attitudes and opportunities were emerging in Uganda, especially with respect to legal professionals whose first qualifications are not Ugandan.

Corporate And Commercial Law Department

This encompasses the full range of corporate and commercial law services. The department also enshrines other fields of law that may not be strictly regarded as pertaining to corporate and commercial law but are closely related thereto. Below is a non-exclusive summary of our major areas of practice in this department.

Banking and Finance

In the area of banking and finance the firm advises on complex banking issues, documentary credit, electronic banking, innovative finance structuring, legal opinions, project & asset finance, regulatory advice, secured and unsecured lending, securitisation and syndicated loans.

Bankruptcy, Insolvency, Receivership and Liquidation

The firm advises receivers, creditors, insolvent companies, and bankrupt individuals regarding diverse issues including; arrangements, bankruptcy proceedings, distribution of proceeds, lodging of claims, powers of receivers, priority & ranking issues, winding up& bankruptcy proceedings, and settlements. Our experience as advisors to the creditors and debtors enables us to offer comprehensive and pragmatic advice to our clients.

Commercial Arbitration

Due to the training and experience of itsPartners, the Firm has good potential inmatters of arbitration and negotiations whichis to date a very practical means of settlingcommercial disputes.

Insurance

We have a solid insurance practice at the firm. We advise our clients and if the need arises represent them in court regarding matters entailing denied claims, insurable interests, mandatory insurance, and subrogation. We also carry out regulatory-related work including applying for operating licenses.

Tax and Revenue Law

The firm advises its clients on several tax and revenue law issues related to tax liabilities, international taxation (including taxation treaties), and tax planning. We also represent our clients in tax litigation.

Property and Migration Law Department

Property Law

Our property and immigration law department is headed by Brian Tendo – Partner. The department routinely advises clients on property law issues including, ownership, co-ownership, landlord-tenant relationships, leases & licenses, mortgages, and various registrable interests.

Immigration Law

We regularly advise on Ugandan immigration law generally, process entry permits (work permits) for our clients and handle immigration appeals. Most of the clients who employ non-Ugandan members of staff rely onus to regularise their immigration status.

Intellectual Property and Labour Law Department

Intellectual Property

The firm handles applications for various intellectual property rights including copyrights, trademarks and patents, we advise on copyright law, franchising, licensing, confidence, internet law (domain names, e-commerce & web-sites), trademarks law, trade secrets and transfer of technology. We also handle dealings in intellectual property rights such as transfers, assignments and renewals. Further, our firm practices intellectual property litigation enshrining passing off cases and enforcement of intellectual property rights litigation.

Labour Law

We advise our clients on various aspects of labour law including advice on employment contacts, employer-employee disputes, industrial disputes, pension funds, redundancies & restructuring, trade unions, and workmen’s compensation. The firm is regularly requested by its clients to draft employment contracts and standard form contracts of service.

Litigation department

The firm’s litigation department is overseen by Ms. Rita Aceng Ogwang – Administrative Partner, who handles a broad range of litigation matters. We routinely represent our clients in general corporate & commercial litigation and litigation. We also act for our clients in specialized litigation such as construction litigation, environmental litigation, and tax litigation.
